BACKING UP YOUR FOOTSCAN DATABASE
It is good practice to understand how and where your patient data is stored to protect yourself against data loss.

The Footscan database is stored locally on the computer where the software was initially installed (data is not saved to the cloud, some data is, read more below). As you add patients and scans, that data is saved into a single database file. It is recommended to backup that file regularly. Computers do crash and hard drives can fail, so you will save yourself from stress, time and revenue loss by backing up your database.

The database file is located here by default:
C:\Users\YourUserName\footscan\gaitessentials9\footscan.sqlite
If you use an IT support service or have an IT support person, provide them this page and ask them to implement a backup strategy for you.
If you are backing up yourself, here are a few simple tips on how to complete the database backup:

I. In the Footscan software, click on the Database tab. You will see a Backup database menu item on the left as shown below. Select this option.
II. You are now presented with a window asking you where you want to save the file. Select a location or choose the default folder. Then click ‘Back-up’ button on the bottom right.
The database is now being backed up to the location you specified.

III. Backing up the data to the same computer is a good first step, but if that computer crashes, then you will still have lost your data. It is strongly recommended that you take that backed up database file and store it on another device, like a USB stick, external drive, another computer on your network or cloud storage.
IV. It is worth noting that some of your data is saved to the Footscan cloud. Specifically orders. Whenever you submit an order, the patient details and corresponding scan files are uploaded to the Footscan cloud. This data is available to you should you ever lose your patient database, but only the patients and scans that were submitted as part of an order are available.

There are also popular cloud storage options from Google and Microsoft with a free tier level. However using this type of cloud storage would still require you to manually copy the backed up database file into their cloud drives.
